natural gas
warning. this post contains some scatological content.
kabs forwarded to me this website on sunshine house a home for cambodian children orphaned by aids cos i was looking for a charity to raise funds for. a group of us are planning to trek kota kinabalu, said to be the highest mountain in southeast asia at around 4095m and my boss said, why don't you use that to raise funds for charity. yah, why not? i've always wanted to do something for the cambodian children.
kabs and i went to sunshine house some two years back as a side trip of our marine conservation expedition to koh kong, cambodia. you'll never be quite the same after hearing the stories of poverty and lives torn apart by war.
so anyways, sunshine house is in kampong speu in phnom penh. it is set in grassy fields with rolling hills in the background. very clean and well-run and you get the feeling that the children in this home really have a chance in the world which they will not have if they were out there roaming the streets, fending for themselves. this home provides more than just a roof. it provides these children with hope.
and one admirable thing about the home is that it aims to be self-sustainable. there's an eco-farm where livestock are bred and sold for profit. the waste produced by the animals are collected and processed to produce methane gas which is used as fuel for cooking. how eco-friendly!
so how is this shit gas produced? the manure is collected in a covered lagoon. acid-forming bacteria is introduced to break the stuff down into fatty acids. then methane forming bacteria is introduced to break down the acids into methane and carbon dioxide. this process also helps remove much of the odour from the manure, which is then used as plant fertilizer. the biogas produced can be used as fuel or generate electricity. this is a very simplified description. of course, the process is a little more intricate. click here to read more.
